If you’ve ever noticed your website’s rankings suddenly rise or fall, you’ve experienced the effects of a Google algorithm update. These changes can reshape search results overnight, leaving even established brands wondering why their visibility has shifted.

Today, Google’s algorithm is more advanced than ever. With the rise of AI, machine learning, and natural language processing, every update refines how Google determines which websites deserve to appear at the top of the results. Core updates, spam updates, and content-focused changes now roll out regularly, so maintaining visibility requires constant monitoring and adaptability.

So, what exactly is Google’s algorithm, and how does it work? At Verkeer, we help UAE businesses understand what happens behind the scenes, how updates impact your digital performance, and what you can do to stay ahead in one of the region’s most competitive online markets.

What is the Google Algorithm?

Google’s algorithm is the system the search engine uses to decide which web pages appear when you search for something. Every time you type a query into Google, the algorithm scans billions of pages in its index and ranks them in order of relevance, quality, and usefulness.

Usually a term used by technical whizzes and mathematical geniuses, an algorithm is essentially a set process or guidelines that describe how to perform or achieve a task. Google follows this same definition for its search engine. Think about the last time you searched for something on Google. Regardless of what you typed in, there would have been millions of potential results for you to choose from, with a select few on the first page. How did it decide which results to show you, and why did it decide that order? Google’s algorithm.

Google’s algorithm is a frequently changing calculation that it uses to determine which website or page is most relevant to a user’s search, and where it should be ranked in its results pages. These calculations are completed at lightning speed, and rankings can move up and down as a website changes and evolves.

What’s important for UAE businesses to know is that these algorithm updates usually roll out first in the US, then in the UK, before gradually reaching the Middle East. That means companies in the UAE have a valuable window of time to learn from early global trends, adapt quickly, and minimise any negative impact before the changes fully take effect locally.

How does Google’s algorithm work?

To find out how and where to rank a webpage, Google needs to index and crawl the website or webpage. Crawling in this sense means when Google scours a page or website and analyses every element possible. Each trait of the page is then given a value and the one with the most value is rewarded with highest rankings. Top spots are often taken by businesses who have expertise in-house or who work with an SEO agency.

Part of Google’s algorithm uses keywords to determine a ranking for a website or page, and in years gone by it was commonplace for people to ‘keyword stuff’ their website content with the thinking that the more the keyword was written, the more important a page was to a topic. However, Google clocked onto this and amended their algorithm so that anyone who was stuffing their content with keywords was penalised. This tactic and other ‘black hat’ SEO tactics are usually done to try and outsmart Google but are always quickly penalised as a result. In other words, you have to play by their rules, otherwise there are consequences.

Google doesn’t give much away when it comes to the algorithm and any updates, unless a major change is afoot. The latest update, nicknamed ‘The Medic Update’ by Search Engine Land, was unofficially focused on health and medical websites, and ‘Your Money Your Life’ websites. This is the term used for websites that can have an impact on your current or future well-being (physical, financial, safety etc). Despite this focus, the most recent update was one of the largest to date, with volatility being experienced by virtually every site owner, webmaster and SEO agency. Danny Sullivan said that it was aimed at “improving search results” as opposed to targeting “low quality” websites.

In 2025, Google’s algorithm has evolved far beyond simple keyword matching. While keywords still help Google understand what a page is about, the real focus is now on meaning and intent, or how well your content answers what people actually want to know. Outdated tactics like keyword stuffing or hiding text no longer work and can even damage your rankings.

Instead, Google rewards websites that show Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness (E-E-A-T). These signals help Google identify brands and authors that offer reliable and valuable information, which is especially important in competitive UAE sectors such as real estate, finance, hospitality and healthcare.

One of the biggest changes in recent years has been Google’s focus on helpful, people-first content. The Helpful Content system, which is now part of the Core algorithm, prioritises pages written for users rather than search engines. Alongside regular Core Updates across 2024 and 2025, this shift has made search results more dynamic and rewarding for UAE businesses that provide genuine value, strong technical performance and a trustworthy online presence.

Although Google rarely shares the full details of its algorithm, every update supports one goal: to deliver the most relevant and high-quality results possible. For businesses, that means keeping your website authentic, user-focused and technically sound is more important than ever.

In mid-2024, a collection of internal Google Search documents was accidentally published online, offering new insights into how the search engine may evaluate and rank websites. The files showed that Google analyses a wide range of signals, including:

  • Click behaviour and engagement
  • Links and link diversity
  • Content quality
  • Entities such as brands, authors and locations
  • Chrome usage data

The documents also mentioned systems like Navboost, which uses click data to refine rankings, and SiteAuthority, which may measure overall site trust. They suggested that Google tracks historical versions of pages, considers brand strength and uses Chrome data to understand engagement. While Google has not confirmed the authenticity of these files, they align with court testimony showing that user interaction plays a role in rankings.

What are Google Algorithm Updates?

Google’s algorithm has changed significantly over the years. What began as a simple system focused on links and keywords has grown into an advanced, AI-driven process that understands meaning, intent and user experience.

Back in the early 2010s, updates like Panda and Penguin made a big impact on the SEO world. Panda targeted low-quality and duplicate content, while Penguin focused on websites using spammy link-building tactics. These updates encouraged everyone to move away from keyword stuffing and create content that genuinely helps users.

Then came Hummingbird in 2013, which allowed Google to understand natural language searches, followed by RankBrain in 2015, its first major use of machine learning. By 2019, BERT helped Google interpret the full meaning of words within context. Search became less about what people typed and more about what they meant.

In more recent years, the focus has shifted towards experience and trust. Updates such as Page Experience and Helpful Content rewarded websites that are fast, user-friendly and genuinely valuable. Around this time, Google also introduced E-E-A-T to define what quality content really means.

For UAE businesses, these changes have been especially important. With industries such as real estate, finance and tourism becoming increasingly competitive online, Google’s focus on quality and trust means that local brands need to invest in content that truly serves users and builds credibility.

Google Algorithm Update

In July 2024, Google launched the Explicit Fake Content Update, aimed at reducing harmful deepfakes and non-consensual explicit imagery in search results. Although it was not a direct SEO update, it highlighted Google’s ongoing commitment to authenticity and user safety across all regions, including the Middle East.

The March 2024 Core Update was another major development. It integrated the Helpful Content system directly into Google’s main ranking algorithm, making the helpfulness of your content a key ranking factor.

In June 2025, Google released a broad Core Update designed to highlight content that best satisfies user intent. While it was less dramatic than previous updates, it reinforced the trend of rewarding content that is relevant, trustworthy and created for people rather than algorithms.

Finally, the August 2025 Spam Update targeted manipulative SEO practices and low-quality content. Websites that relied on spam, thin AI-generated copy or heavy keyword use saw noticeable drops in visibility. It served as a clear reminder that long-term success in search depends on authenticity, helpfulness and quality.

Why the Algorithm Matters for Businesses

Every time Google updates its algorithm, it changes how people find information online. For businesses, that means visibility in search results can shift quickly. If your website depends on Google to attract customers, these updates can directly affect how many people discover your products, services or content.

When Google releases a Core Update, it is refining how it measures quality, relevance and trust. Websites that consistently publish valuable, well-structured and credible content tend to perform better after these updates. In contrast, sites that rely on outdated SEO tactics or ignore content quality can experience a sudden drop in rankings and traffic.

Algorithm updates also encourage businesses to keep improving. They reward those that invest in strong content, modern design and a positive user experience. Whether it is improving page speed, earning high-quality backlinks or creating content that genuinely helps people, these are all long-term improvements that go far beyond SEO.

For smaller brands in the UAE, keeping up with these updates can seem challenging, but they also present an opportunity. Each update gives businesses that are authentic, transparent and customer-focused a chance to compete with larger players. By staying informed and adapting quickly, you can turn every algorithm change into a chance to grow your visibility rather than lose it.

It’s important to stay up to date with any changes that Google makes, no matter how minor or major, because the ripple effects can be quite significant.
